Why Does Milk Boil Over but Water Doesn’t? Explained for Kids
Milk looks quiet when you place it on the stove. But as it gets hotter, a little drama begins inside the vessel. A thin layer forms on top, bubbles grow underneath it, and suddenly the milk rushes upward and spills over! But why does milk do this while plain water usually does not?

A Tiny Lid on Top
Milk contains mostly water, but it also has proteins and fat. When milk gets hot, some of its water changes into steam. At the same time, heat changes the proteins, while fat and cream collect near the surface.
Together, they can form a thin skin on top of the milk. You may have noticed this layer when hot milk is left still for some time. This skin behaves a little like a lid. Steam bubbles coming from below cannot escape as easily.
Here Comes the Foam!
The trapped steam keeps pushing upward. Milk also contains proteins that help bubbles stay together instead of bursting quickly.
Soon, many bubbles collect under and around the skin, making a thick foam. Foam takes up much more space than liquid milk. So the milk begins to rise... higher... higher... and then whoosh! It crosses the edge of the vessel.
Plain water does not usually make such strong, lasting foam, so its steam bubbles can burst more easily at the surface.
How Can We Stop It?
Stirring the milk breaks the skin and lets steam escape. Heating it on a low flame gives the bubbles more time to burst. A larger vessel also gives the rising foam extra space.
A wooden spoon across the vessel may help break some bubbles, but the best trick is simple: keep watching the milk! Because milk seems to have one special talent - it often waits for the moment you look away!
