A Strong Bed for the Track

These stones are called ballast. They are placed under and around the sleepers - the long pieces that hold the two rails in place. When a heavy train passes, its weight pushes down strongly on the track.

Ballast helps spread this weight over the ground below. It also holds the sleepers firmly so the track does not easily move or sink. Without good support, railway tracks could slowly become uneven.

Why Are the Stones Sharp?

Ballast stones are usually rough and have sharp edges. This helps them lock together, a little like puzzle pieces. Smooth, round stones could roll and move when trains rushed past.

Trains also make the track shake. Hot and cold weather can make steel rails expand and shrink slightly. The packed stones give the track strong support while still allowing tiny movements.

What Happens When It Rains?

There is another clever reason for using stones. Rainwater can quickly flow through the gaps between them. This helps stop water from collecting under the railway track and making the soil soft and weak.

Over time, the stones may move or become uneven. Special railway machines can lift the track and push the ballast back into the right place. Hard rocks such as granite and basalt are often used because they can handle heavy loads for a long time.
