His birthday is celebrated as a special festival across India. He organised one of the world's oldest collections of knowledge so people could learn it more easily. He was also the biological father of three famous brothers who changed the course of Indian history. Yet, most people know him by another name. Can you guess who he is?

What Does His Name Mean?

His first name, Krishna, means "dark" and refers to his dark complexion. Dvaipayana means "the one born on an island," because he was born on an island in the Yamuna River. His parents were the sage Parashara and Satyavati.

The Great Organiser

Long ago, India's ancient knowledge was not written in books. It was carefully memorised and passed from teacher to student by speaking and listening. This great sage organised this knowledge into four books making it much easier for future generations to learn and preserve.

Because he arranged them, people gave him another famous name which means “compiler”, or “arranger."

A Man Who Changed History

He was also the biological father of Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and Vidura, three important figures in ancient Indian history. Through his wisdom and teachings, he shaped Indian culture and inspired millions of people for thousands of years.

Even today, on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Ashadha, people celebrate the birthday of this great teacher by thanking their own teachers and guides, on Guru Purnima.
