What Is an Avalanche?

Recently, the news carried a sad story about famous Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, who died in an avalanche while climbing Broad Peak in Pakistan. High in the mountains, everything can look quiet and peaceful. Then, in just a few moments, a huge mass of snow can suddenly rush downhill. How can snow that looks so soft become so dangerous?

When Snow Starts to Slide

An avalanche happens when a large amount of snow suddenly slides down a mountain. Snow often builds up in layers. Sometimes a strong layer sits on top of a weak, soft layer. If that weak layer breaks, the snow above it can crack and race downhill.

Wind, fresh snow, rain and warmer weather can all make the snow less stable. Some avalanches begin as a small patch and grow wider as they move. Others break away as one big sheet of snow. These are called slab avalanches, and they can be especially dangerous.

Can We Know One Is Coming?

Experts carefully watch the mountains. They study how much snow has fallen, how strong the wind is and whether the temperature is rising. They may even dig small holes called snow pits to look at the different layers hidden below.

They also use weather stations, cameras, satellites and computers. But predicting exactly when an avalanche will happen is very difficult. That is why experts give danger warnings instead.

How Can People Stay Safe?

In dangerous places, roads may be closed and people may be moved to safer areas. Special barriers, forests and covered roads called snow sheds can also help protect people.

Climbers and skiers always follow avalanche warnings and avoid risky slopes. Even experienced mountain climbers know one important rule: sometimes the safest adventure is turning back. Mountains are beautiful, but they are powerful too. Learning to respect them can save lives.

The tragedy in Nepal reminds us that an avalanche can do more than rush down a mountain - it can change rivers, trigger deadly floods and affect entire communities. The more we understand the mountains, the better we can respect their beauty, their power and their dangers.
